How Much Does a Bathroom Remodel Cost in Houston?

There are lots of great reasons to remodel a bathroom in Houston. Maybe you want to make it more energy efficient, or better suited for aging-in-place. Maybe you’ve got leaking plumbing or water damage, or you just want to update the style and increase your home value.

Whatever your motivation may be, Legal Eagle Contractors can achieve the look you’re going for while staying within your budget.

But how big should your budget be? Let’s dive into how much a typical bathroom remodel costs in Houston and some of the factors related to the financial side of this type of renovation project.

Bathroom Remodels by the Numbers

Below is a rough breakdown of bathroom remodeling costs in Houston by project size and quality of materials.

Small Bathroom Large Bathroom Average Cost
Basic up to $2,200 $10,000 $7,750
Mid-range up to $7,300 $16,900 $11,900
Luxury up to $15,000 $28,700 $25,000

As you can see, the amounts vary widely based on these two broad factors. Generally speaking, the typical Houston mid-range bathroom remodel costs around $11,000-$12,000.

Breaking Down the Costs

Rather than give you ballpark figures for each of the major items that are often updated in a bathroom remodel, we’ve found two real-world prices for each: one low-end from a big-box store, and one high-end from a luxury brand or specialized retailer.

This should help you gauge your costs based on how extravagant you want to make the new bathroom.

Big-Box Store Price Specialized Retailer Price
Lighting Fixtures $60 three-light vanity light $1,400 large surface-mount LED mirror
Cabinets $167 24-inch wall $2,300 custom single vanity
Vanity Countertop $200 37-inch imitation stone $1,155 61-inch quartz
Flooring $1.69/sq. ft. vinyl planks $17.99/sq. ft. polished marble tile
Bathtub $175 60-inch alcove soaking $6,300 74-inch drop-in Whirlpool
Shower Hardware $60 single-function $1,129 rainwater showerhead with hand shower and body spray system
Toilet $90 high-efficiency single-flush $2,897 tankless with touchscreen remote
Sink $39 porcelain drop-in $1,449 concrete and jute fiber double drop-in

The Cost of Different Bathroom Projects

Sometimes the bathroom remodel you want involves only one low- to medium-complexity job. Here are the ranges of costs for some of the most popular:

Bathroom Project Cost Range
Adding a walk-in shower $2,500 – $8,500
Converting a bathtub to a shower $1,200 – $8,000
Installing a glass shower door $800 – $1,500
Refinishing a bathtub $300 – $700
Repairing a glass shower door $130 – $400

The Factors Affecting Cost

As we’ve already shown, the size of the bathroom and the quality of the materials are two major factors affecting your overall sticker price for a bathroom remodel.

However, other factors play a big role as well, such as whether you’re changing…

  • the footprint/layout of the bathroom
  • the wiring
  • the plumbing
  • the amenities dramatically

Except for the last point, making these types of major changes increases the remodel cost significantly, mainly due to the amount of labor involved. And unless you’re taking away amenities, changing them by adding new features will of course make the costs go up, as well.

What Kind of ROI Should You Expect from a Bathroom Remodel?

According to the most recent Remodeling Impact Report from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), bathroom remodels come in right near the middle of the 12 most common remodeling projects, both in terms of resale value added and increased appeal to homebuyers.

NARI estimates the average bathroom renovation will recover 57% of the cost of the project in a home sale.

By comparison, an HVAC replacement nets an estimated 85%, while a kitchen renovation recovers 59%.

How to Save Money on a Bathroom Remodel

For a relatively small room that you probably spend only a small portion of your day in, the cost of a bathroom remodel may surprise you. But there are some ways you can keep costs down:

  • Keep the plumbing as-is: Relocating utilities such as moving sinks or converting the tub to a shower makes the project more complex and more expensive. If you can work with the pipes where they are, that’s always the most cost-effective option. The same goes for load-bearing walls and wiring.
  • Choose wisely: Man-made materials such as vinyl flooring can not only look great and function well in a bathroom, they can free your budget up for a higher-dollar item such as a premium-quality stone countertop or sink.
  • DIY when you can: Some jobs are best left to the professionals, but some–such as replacing a toilet–are fairly simple to do and can save you money on labor. There are incredible resources and how-tos online for all common jobs that can walk you through them.
  • Get more efficient: Speaking of toilets, if yours was made prior to 1994, you could save well over $100 per year on your water bill by switching to a low-flow toilet.
