St. Moritz – Kitchen Renovation II

Project scope | Transform a closed-off, dated kitchen into an open, modern space fit for avid chefs |
The owners of this home love to cook but their old kitchen had neither the look nor the functionality they desired. Our design solved both problems, giving them a lovely area loaded with convenient features to help them get the most enjoyment out of their culinary projects.
A custom commercial brushed stainless steel countertop with integrated sink reflects light through the new double casement window, complete with crank handles for a homey touch. Convenient tilt-outs hold small sink accessories and a pull-out below the sink is perfect for storing kitchen cleaning items.
New furniture-grade, full overlay, Amish-made cherry cabinetry packs tons of storage and looks incredible with stately moulding at the top. The new desk by the door provides extra storage and a small work space and features a steel leg that matches the steel support of the island’s table section. It’s lit by new can lights over the banquette area.
Goodbye furr downs, hello open concept! Instead of a cramped counter, the owners now have an impressive “runway” modular island topped with maple butcher block. The middle section of the island is removable to allow easier movement through the kitchen, leaving the end section to become a breakfast nook table.
Another shot displaying how spacious the kitchen now feels without the furr downs. A head-height whiteboard permanently removes the need for sticky notes. The cabinets have been carefully designed to hide power outlets so as to preserve the clean look of the striking green tile, highlighted by the modern stainless steel vent hood.
Project Highlights
- The floor is made of white cork, an unusual choice but perfect for standing and cooking comfortably for long periods of time.
- In removing the furr downs, we had to reroute the A/C into the garage, which was no small task but had to be done to open up the room.
- The Amish cabinets are loaded with clever built-in storage features, including pull-out drawers, compartmentalized cabinets, and open shelving for easy access and/or decoration. The bi-fold pantry door hides similarly roomy storage behind a compact exterior.
- Note the four (!) stainless steel ovens: convection, microwave, conventional, and warmer at the bottom.
