Park – Master Bath Remodel

Project scope | Replace everything but the cabinets |
Bellaire homes are some of the nicest in Houston, but about half of them were built between 20 and 50 years ago. The owners of this home had tired of their master bathroom’s holdover accents from the 1980s and wanted to update for a more modern look, especially in the shower.
We created for them a space with class and convenience, including several universal design features, which we always encourage our customers to adopt for the longest enjoyment and use of a room as possible.
The shower previously was surrounded by sheetrock walls, one of which supported the TV. Once we installed a frameless glass shower door to open things up and create clean lines, we moved the TV over the stylish new door that no longer sports an ironing board.
In addition to being dated, the old Hollywood-style strip lighting added about 15 degrees to the vanity area when switched on. New LED lights provide better visibility without the heat, and a hardwired makeup mirror offers great functionality with no visible wires or wall switches.
Since the cabinets weren’t being replaced, we matched the tub skirt to the existing cabinetry; the left side is actually a door with hidden hinges, behind which are wire baskets for storing toiletries. The porcelain floor tile with key accents is mirrored in a subway pattern in the shower.
We replaced the tub and widened the deck to make it more comfortable to get in and out, which we matched to the existing granite counters. The tub surround features a mosaic accent strip in the backsplash, a callout to the one in the walk-in shower.
A Hansgrohe shower tower with body sprays is an instant ticket to blissful rejuvenation. And the striped mosaic listello of glass and ceramic tile jazzes up the otherwise gray walls.
A shower niche for bath and body supplies and a corner bench perfect for leg shaving are convenient and elegant updates for the new shower. Large-format (12”x 24”) shower tiles make the walls look much less busy than before and will be easier to maintain over time.
Project Highlights
- Shower benches are great, but many of our customers prefer a floating bench like this shower’s to the boxier built-in versions. The open area underneath makes the space feel airier and dries more easily, and some homeowners feel it’s easier to stand up from. It also looks more modern and is functional, too, allowing space for storage, if desired.
- The shower system is not only luxurious, it’s a universal design product, incorporating an easily-grasped levered handle and showerhead that can be raised or lowered for adults or children, someone seated, or someone of small stature.
