Creating clean lines and opening up the space were priorities A and B for this kitchen in the Briar Forest neighborhood of Southwest Houston. As part of a whole-home remodel, we transformed this room from a sequestered part of the house into a chic, welcoming hub for family and friends.
The kitchen is reborn and everything is new, from the warm, wide-plank flooring to the stainless steel appliances to the prefabricated cabinetry. Even the crown moulding and paint has been updated.
From this view one can appreciate the redesign of the kitchen layout: the sink, range, and dishwasher have all been moved, and the very large furr down and the peninsula below it have been completely taken out.
Removing the furr down and peninsula has not only opened up the entire kitchen, it’s helped make everything brighter by allowing in light from the large dining area windows. New under-cabinet lighting, recessed lighting, and distinctive drum light over the table all help, as well.
A good look at the new appliances in their new positions. Note the craftsmanship in cabinetry that completely envelops the vent hood, leaving no trace but function.
The shutter doors between the kitchen and family room are gone, providing a seamless transition from one room to the next. To the right, notice the beautiful milk glass, small subway tiles of the backsplash. Their creamy presence as a backdrop is yet another feature that makes this kitchen sing a streamlined song.
Even the family room gets more light and more openness from the removal of the shutter doors and framing, while the striking new stone counter that separates the room from the kitchen manages to update both at the same time.
