Braes Meadow – Kitchen Renovation

This home was built in a style typical of Meyerland homes: when you come into the entry hall there’s a doorway into the den and another into the front formal area. The kitchen and laundry room are very much closed off. The owners wanted to open everything up and modernize it, which meant some heavy demo work and some fun shopping for new pieces.
With the wall between the kitchen and den removed, the huge island now occupies the place where the fridge and oven had been. We also knocked out the furr downs over the wall between the kitchen and what had been the formal dining area, and added an archway into the dining area.
Here you can really appreciate the new open feel with the den wall gone and just how big this new kitchen area now is.
Everything that carved out the old breakfast nook, from the floor up to the furr downs, was removed. The owners didn’t lose any counter or storage space, however, as we added counters and cabinets along both sides of the back doorway. Imitation wood tile flooring replaced the dated patterned linoleum.
The old cabinets are replaced with new, high-end cabinets lit on the under side by ribbon LEDs. The cabinet doors in the back left corner are actually not glass, they have a netting-type fabric stretched over them, which was a design the owners devised.
We call this “the kitchen with no pantry,” and to make up for this storage area staple the owners now have this full-extension pull-out cabinet, in addition to all their other cabinet space.
The old kitchen had literally nowhere for those not involved in the cooking to congregate. The new version has this spacious island area, where this chimney hood vent is the striking centerpiece, with matching stainless steel gas cooktop.
Project Highlights
- Although these under-cabinet lights are 5000-lumen LEDs that the owners chose, we typically install a max of 3000 lumens. But we use a kit that models color temperature and brightness for you so you can see how a particular light will look in your house before you choose one.
- The dramatic granite on the island and counters had to be specially fabricated and the end result was amazing. Can you spot the seam on the island where the pieces connect?
